Located at the West Palm Beach Center

LSF is looking for a talented Teacher II who wants to make an impact in the lives of others.

Purpose & Impact

Serves as lead worker in the classroom.  Under the direction of the Center Director, assists in overseeing and directing the planning, organizing, and implementation of education services for children, in addition to classroom teacher duties.  Per licensing regulations, named as Lead Teacher by the Center Director for the Center assigned.  Participates in the HS/EHS Quality Assurance efforts.

A Day in the Life of a Teacher II.

  • Leadership responsibilities:
    • Reviews teachers' lesson plans, schedules, room arrangements and portfolio assessments to assure their accordance with HS requirements;
    • Delivers pre-service and monthly in-service training sessions to teaching staff;
    • Provides a minimum of two child development workshops to parents;
    • Identifies and prioritizes materials and equipment needed in classrooms and playgrounds, and coordinate with center director and education staff in making purchases;
    • Lead responsibility for parent involvement in education services as per HS requirements;
    • Coordinates the transition of children to Kindergarten and/or child care programs in collaboration with Education and Family & Community Engagement staff.
  • Guides and facilitates activities of the children, including: daily activities, field trips, selecting and arranging equipment and materials in the classroom;
  • Cooperates with other staff and classroom groups to maintain the smooth functioning of the center, which at times may require changes to meet the needs of the children;
  • Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including weekly observations in each area, examples of the child's work, and a developmental assessment.
  • Uses home visits and parent conferences to discuss the child's individual development and progress, assist the parents in developing observational skills and solicit parent observations;
  • Eats with and assists children in development of social and self-help skills, and sound nutritional practices;
  • Meets bi-weekly with center director and classroom staff to exchange information pertinent to the identification and services of children with disabilities;
  • Meets with the Mental Health and Disabilities Supervisor monthly to discuss mental health needs of children;
  • Guide children's acquisition of social skills;
  • Attend staff training and meetings, and board and parent meetings as requested;
  • Works with Teachers, Teacher Assistant and volunteers to use and develop their skills and abilities in planning and carrying out classroom activities;
  • Maintains a safe and healthy classroom environment. Assure that classroom equipment, furniture, materials, and supplies are properly maintained and stored;
  • Uses the playground as an extension of the classroom; assures that the playground is safe;
  • Assists in conducting the daily health and environment checklist;
  • Ensures that at least 80% of the children are kindergarten ready.
  • Performs quality staff-child interactions resulting in a CLASS scores greater than the lowest 10% of the threshold in each domain.
  • Uses active supervision techniques and maintains positive classroom behavior.
  • Receives a satisfactory or higher score on the Teacher Success Rubric.
  • Reports suspected child abuse and neglect to designated state agency.
  • Assists in implementing children's I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan) or I.F.S.P. (Individual Family Service Plan) seeking clarification for any aspects that are not well understood;
  • Assists in recruiting and orienting volunteers, providing them with guidance as needed,
  • Completes and submits required forms and records in a timely and accurate fashion, e.g., lesson plans, time sheets, meal reports etc.;
  • Actively participates in the development and implementation of the Teacher professional development plan;
  • Ensures that files are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained; and maintains strict confidentiality with respect to Head Start/Early Head Start children, families and staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Attends all workshops and meetings as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
  • Attends all required staff and parent meetings and activities.
  • Perform other duties, as may be required. 


Minimum Qualification Requirements:


  1. A baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education; or a baccalaureate or advanced degree in any subject, and coursework equivalent to a major relating to Early Childhood Education with experience teaching preschool-aged children.  Coursework equivalent to a major related to Early Childhood Education includes but is not limited to the following:
  • Teaching credentials: licensure or certification by the state for Pre-K teachers recognized by the local school district or state education agency as qualifying teachers to teach pre-school children in that school district or state if the individual has at least 500 clock hours of experience in an early childhood setting teaching pre-school aged children. OR
  • Coursework: No less than 18 semester credits in courses that focus specifically on child development, early childhood education and curriculum, early childhood teaching and assessment, psychology, family development, health and physical development, mathematics, science and children’s literature.  These courses may have been taken in various departments such as Education, Home Economics, Music, Art, Library Sciences, Physical Education and Recreation, Psychology, Family Studies, and others, and must specifically address young children.
  1. A baccalaureate degree in any field and has been admitted into the Teach For America program, passed a rigorous early childhood content exam, such as the Praxis II, participated in a Teach For America summer training institute that includes teaching preschool children, and is receiving ongoing professional development and support from Teach For America’s professional staff.

Completion of State Childcare Training required. including Certificate of Completion of an approved 10 hour Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Preschoolers or Infant/Toddlers Course; and proof of successful completion of the following courses: 6 hours Child Growth and Development; 6 hours Behavioral Observation & Screening; 8 hours Health, Safety & Nutrition; 4 hours Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect; and 6 hours Child Care Facility Rules and Regulations, or a 30 hour Introductory Child Care Training Course. In addition all state mandated courses for the Voluntary prekindergarten required.  A State of Florida Child Care and Education Program Director Credential; and Possession of a valid Driver License.  Must be 21 years of age.

Experience: Two years of experience teaching Head Start, Early Head Start, pre-school or kindergarten age children. Bilingual preferred: English/Spanish or English and other languages present in the local area.

Also required: Certification in First Aid and CPR within 90 days from the date of hire; and successful completion of a Level II background screening, local criminal record check and drug screening prior to hiring.
